Speeding Tickets (NY): Don’t Ignore Them

By Warren Redlich A lot of people who get speeding tickets ignore them or forget about them. This is not a good idea. In New York, a traffic court will send a notice to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if you don’t “appear” for the ticket. You can appear by mailing in a plea (guilty or not guilty), by going to Court, or by hiring a lawyer to appear for you. Usually the Court will not send the notice to DMV until at least 60 days after the date your ticket says you’re supposed to appear. This will also occur if you appear but then don’t show up for a scheduled court date. Once DMV gets that notice from the Court, they will mail a suspension notice to the address they have for you. The notice gives you another 30 days to appear before you’re suspended. If you have moved and have not notified DMV of your change in address, you will probably not get the notice. But they will suspend you anyway. If you’ve been suspended, there is a $35 fee for terminating the suspension. This is known as a “Suspension Termination Fee” or “Scofflaw Termination Fee.” The fee is paid to the Court and you still have to appear in Court (or have an attorney appear for you) in order to get the suspension lifted. The Court will then give you a “Notice of Appearance” (sometimes called a “lift”) which you would carry with you in case you get pulled over. While your license is suspended, it is a crime for you to drive in New York. If you are pulled over, you will be charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (AUO) in the 3rd degree, a misdemeanor. This is a big deal, and you can expect to pay through the nose to get this resolved. Our office charges $1000 or more to handle an AUO. If your license gets revoked (usually for other reasons), having an AUO or some of the common reductions from AUO on your record can mean that DMV will not reinstate your license for up to 3 years. Residents of other states will face different consequences. Each state is different. We often get calls from residents of other states who can’t renew their license because of unresolved tickets in New York State. This can get very expensive and can also take a lot of time. Recently we charged an out-of-state driver $2000 (plus suspension termination fees) to clear up suspensions in three different courts. He had to go several weeks without being able to drive. While we work quickly in such cases, the Courts do not always respond quickly. New York residents can also get suspended for ignoring tickets in other states, and may face an AUO charge if they continue to drive while suspended. Speeding Ticket Lawyer Warren Redlich handles traffic, DWI and criminal matters, as well as personal injury cases, across New York State. He is developing a traffic court directory to assist people in finding out more information about the courts where their traffic matters are pending, including contact information and maps. Tips for Business Card Success

By Frank Owen Business cards are an essential tool for any business whether a multi-million pound corporation or small, family business. They allow companies and the individuals within a company to distribute their brand image and vital information about the business to both members of the public and potential business partners and associates. To make sure you get the most out of your business cards here are our top ten tips to ensure your business cards pack that maximum punch needed to get noticed in the busy business world. 1. Insert Your Logo on Your Business Card In a Prominent Position. You wouldnt believe the number of business cards I have come across over the years that have been handed to me without even a business logo on sure it may have the company credentials, name and the contact information of the person who gave me the card but without the company logo its extremely hard when digging through a large spindle of business cards to find who Im actually looking for. Ensure this doesnt happen and that youre never forgotten by placing your company logo in a prominent position on your business card. 2. List Every Way Possible to Contact You and Your Company This is the most crucial aspect when designing or choosing your business cards. If you get this wrong, your phone may never ring. Do not forget to include your full name, the company name, your e-mail address, the name and number of your secretary, full business address, phone and fax number and even your home number if you arent always available at the office. Business deals are business deals and if that means you must receive a call at 11pm in the evening one night your business and bank manager will thank you for it. 3. Use a Catchy Slogan and You Wont be forgotten! In the business world most business cards look a like and are quite bland and boring. How after meeting a potential new client will you make sure he remembers to call you? With a catchy slogan on your business card, but remember, nothing cheesy. 4. Using a Call to Action While call to actions are often used in sales letters, marketing and promotion materials you must remember that is exactly what your business card is, therefore using a call to action on your business cards is a critical step toward ensuring as many people get in touch with you after receiving your card as possible. Dont just list your company credentials; tell them to get in touch and to call you on your office number. Business cards have conversion rates too. 5. The Use of Color Color can make or break a business card. Too much colour will make people think you arent that serious, while a business card with different shades of grey will give them the impression that youre un-inspiring and lack creativity, aspects which are important to success in the business world. I recommend sticking to a 3 color rule and chosing them wisely. You dont want colors that clash with each other they must compliment. Try looking on a color wheel for ideas. Winning the Interview Game

By Peter Fisher First off, you need to understand that everything they want to know about you is in just 4 key areas: Why are you here? What can you do for us? What sort of person are you? Can we afford you? So you must get yourself prepared for this. Examine each one of these areas and you can be (perhaps) even better prepared than the interviewer you face. Why are you here? This doesn’t mean “why are you in this room?” it means what made you apply for this job? You have to show its because you are interested in the job, the company, the challenge and the chance to learn and develop new skills. That and the fact that you are ready to move for such a great opportunity. Above all you want the job and you are confident that you are right for it (but please dont be too cocky). What can you do for us? An employer is looking to buy results so you bring your experience, skills and achievements, as well as your desire to develop and contribute to a new team or department. Think back to your achievements and skills, and the results you got. But dont just hark back to what you used to do think what you will be capable of in the future and how you will fill the role you want. What sort of person are you? Someone who has initiative and gets on well with others and is flexible in attitude to different ways of working; maybe you are a great team player, or a strong leader or you describe yourself as a loyal and conscientious person. What they really want to know is: will you fit in, or are you going to upset the existing team? Can we afford you? Salary negotiation is another issue altogether, but the point is you should have a feeling for what the remuneration is likely to be and show them that you bring value-for-money. If they put you on the spot to name a figure; shoot a little higher than you think they are prepared to pay, but say the opportunity itself is more important than the actual salary. Thats all fine as a general background but now youve got to be more specific. Put yourself on the other side of the desk if you were doing the interviewing, what would you really want to know that would convince you to make a job offer? Youd want to know more about those 4 key areas above wouldnt you? So what you have to do now is write out your list of questions to explore those 4 areas as if you were the interviewer. This doesn’t mean you should go easy on yourself; the more thorough you are the easier the interview becomes and the better your prospects of winning. Make your list least 25 questions long and dont avoid that question – the one you dont want to be asked (you know the one dont you?) and then work out your answers. If you need help with your answers or even your questions, Peter Fisher has prepared answers to 58 tough questions in the “Smart Interview Guide” which is available by visiting http://www.ebookdownloads.biz/smartguide.htm Peter Fisher is Managing Director of Career consulting Limited. Managing Pond Motives and Expectations

By Brett Fogle INTRODUCTION Water in the garden. It brings us refreshing coolness on the hottest summer day. It satisfies our senses with sounds that only water can make. It delights our eyes with the unsurpassed beauty of colorful water lilies, the glimmering iridescence of fish and reflections from the sky. Water has immense attraction to all people. For centuries Europeans have enjoyed the beauty of fountains and water gardens in their public squares and private estates. Water gardens create “natural” focal points, whether located in the home garden, shopping mall, or office building. This book is written to fill a void in today’s selection of gardening books. A few books are sprinkled here and there, covering specific areas of water gardening such as plants and Koi, but this book is written to cover all facets of decorative water gardening for homeowners as well as professional landscapers and architects. The word “pond” conjures up different images for different people. Some envision a farm pond with a dirt bottom, fed by a creek bed and alive with ducks and frogs. Others see a mossy-covered goldfish pool in the corner of a yard. For our purposes, the word “pond” will be used in the Webster’s Dictionary sense: “artificially enclosed body of water; a body of standing water smaller than a lake, often artificially formed.” In this book you’ll also find some of the newer terms – aquasphere, aquatic habitat, aquatic environment, or waterscape. The reasons for considering a water garden are varied. Commercial landscape architects use water in their designs for effect and uniqueness. Homeowners want to exchange their rakes, lawn mowers and weedeaters for a work free garden. Others desire a pond “just like grandpa always had,” yet most of us are simply looking for a garden to enjoy, a haven for relaxation. Water does have a relaxing affect, whether it be the rhythmic waves of the ocean, a gently running brook, or the quiet beauty of a pond. While we may be unable to recreate nature with oceans and brooks, we can find pleasure in designing and building ponds. MOTIVES Before deciding on a water garden, consider your motives. Ask yourself the following questions: * Why do I want a pond? * Am I trying to save work for myself? * Do I want a part of nature in my own backyard? * Am I looking for a fishpond? Or a plant pond? A fountain or waterfall? * Do I want to cool off in the pond? * Do I want to convert a swimming pool? Am I looking for a focal point in the yard or simply a subtle blend of plants and fish? Many people think water gardening means digging a hole, filling it in with water, plants and fish, and that’s all there is to it. While it’s true that established ponds require minimal work, prospective water gardeners should realize that a certain amount of responsibility goes with a pond garden. When you build a pond, you’re putting in a natural habitat, something that is “alive” and “breathing” with plants and animals. Plants live and grow in this natural habitat; natural gas exchanges are going on; birds, bugs, fish, frogs and animals come to visit and drink from you pond. In other words, you’re doing more than just cementing an area in the yard and filling it with water. You are bringing nature into your surroundings. EXPECTATIONS Prospective water gardeners should also examine their expectations. What do you want from your pond? Before starting construction, you should decide if you want a fishpond, a fish and plant pond, a fountain, or a waterfall. For example, a Koi pond without plants will be constructed differently than ponds containing both fish and plants. Do you want you pond to be a focal point – something that stands out dramatically with waterfalls or spraying fountains? Or is your life hectic and frenzied, so you’re looking for a quiet haven for meditation and relaxation? If you expect a low maintenance, relaxing environment, you’ll find it in water gardening. You may wonder how water gardening can be effortless. The answer is nature. Properly planned water gardens achieve an ecological balance of water, plants, fish, and snails. Water ponds answer a multitude of expectations, but the final decision on what you want from your water garden must come from you. 2005 Brett Fogle Brett Fogle is the owner of MacArthur Water Gardens and several pond-related websites including macarthurwatergardens.com and pond-filters-online.com. Lose Weight and Feel Great

By Sheila Dicks Many people search for a pill, a special diet or some other quick fix to lose weight. The key to weight loss and good health is changing bad habits and developing a healthy lifestyle. If those new diets are not helping you, here are some tips that will. 1. Mistake number one is skipping meals in an effort lose weight. When you starve yourself your body reacts by holding on to fat. Also, when you do eat you are hungrier and are more likely to eat foods that are high in fat and calories. Skipping meals during the day will lead to eating later which will give you less time to burn off those calories. 2. Eat more often and smaller portions during the day. Plan your meals and choose foods that are good for you. Cut and slice fruits and vegetables and store them in your fridge along with other snacks like yogurt, cheese, nuts etc. 3. Stay away from junk food. Free your cupboards from foods high in calories and fat so you wont be tempted. 4. Stay away from new diets. Most of them are unhealthy and if they do work it is only for a short period of time. No matter what people tell you there are no quick fixes to losing weight, it takes time and determination. Get started by choosing a healthy eating plan like Canadas Food Guide. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hpfb-dgpsa/onpp-bppn/food_guide_rainbow_e.html 5. Get to know your foods and what they contain. You may be eating foods that you think are good for you but are giving you added calories. 6. Changing your eating habits is only half the battle. If you want to be slimmer and healthier you will need to exercise. Losing weight means taking in fewer calories than you need. It will be easier to reach your desired weight fit exercise into your life. Find an activity that you like and do it. 7. Log your workout schedule and reward yourself for sticking to your goals. Once you have adopted a healthy lifestyle you will become stronger and will be more motivated to stay on track. Listerine Toenail Fungus Treatment

By David Bloom Youve heard of the mouthwash, but have you heard of the Listerine toenail fungus treatment? It seems that a lot of people are soaking their fungal toenail infections in a basin of Listerine and getting good results. Like people who use other home remedies for this unpleasant infection, people who swear by this oral rinse tried it because they were trying to avoid expensive prescription drugs and their side effects, or had tried the other treatments with no success. Apparently it worked. If youre using Listerine for toenail fungus, be prepared to keep it up for a while though some people claim the remedy works after soaking for 30 minutes a day for just a few days, most fungal toenail infections will take months to clear, whether youre using Listerine, vinegar, or any of the prescription drugs. It just takes a long time for the fungus to die and the new, uninfected nail to grow in. Use it every day never skip a day and in a month or two, you should see some healthy nail growing in. Dont stop using Listerine for toenail fungus until the entire nail is new and looks healthy and normal. Many people find that when it comes to treating nail fungus Listerine and vinegar combined offer even faster results. Fungi do not do well in an acid environment, so adding vinegar to Listerine may give your home remedy a little extra punch, combining the acidic vinegar with whatever is in the Listerine (presumably the disinfectant) that kills the fungal infection. Some people have had good success mixing a half-and-half solution and just painting it on the infected nails several times a day. Theres no guarantee that the Listerine toenail fungus treatment will work for you. It doesnt work for everyone, and no published scientific studies have looked at the effects of using Listerine for toenail fungus, or gathered data on the number of people who used it successfully. If you have the time and the inclination to try it, however, it is certainly much cheaper than prescription drugs that can cost eight dollars a day, or even more, to use. A solution thats safe to put in your mouth is presumably perfectly safe for soaking your feet. It might even feel good! But if youre going to try Listerine for toenail fungus, you should be aware of one potential side effect: it seems that it may turn your feet green! Temporarily. Marriage Advice Your Mother Never Gave You!

By Robert Kokoska Have you heard it said that it takes a village to raise a child? It doesn’t stop there. Much of the wisdom that we get throughout life comes from our village – our group of contacts, friends and mentors, that we trust. In the olden days, marriage advice for young couples would come from parents and grandparents, most of whom would have had longstanding, successful marriages themselves. They were eminently qualified to give marriage advice, and the advice they gave was well taken and utilized. Of course, not every marriage was successful, even back then – but most people agree that marriages had a better chance a few generations ago. Nowadays, it may be up to us to compile our own marriage advice from various friends, family members, professionals and books. The good news is that there’s plenty of advice out there, and much of it is good. At the same time, it might also be time to question some of the traditional marriage advice that we’ve all heard at one time or another. For example, your mother or grandmother might have told you that you should never go to bed angry. The principle is sound – we shouldn’t hold grudges or hold onto anger. But taking this advice too literally may backfire too; problems can look more serious when you’re tired. Sometimes going to bed – even if you’re still angry – might be just what you need to regain perspective. Here’s a great piece of marriage advice, though – take time out for each other, just to be together and communicate, no matter how busy life gets. This investment in your relationship will pay off a thousandfold over the years. One of the big problems that couples experience is that they lose the ability to communicate with one another. They might even feel like they have lost interest in each other and in the relationship, if communication is poor. The best marriage advice is all like that – not necessarily easy to follow, but something you can work at over the years. Marriage can be hard work, but you generally get out of it what you put in. And if we can build solid marriages, we might be well on our way to reviving the ‘villages’ of the past – strong, solid communities that may be a source of traditional wisdom. Are you seeking marriage advice? Learn the 50 secrets to a blissful relationship! The Coming Wrath

By William Bell, Jr. Understanding the Message Simple lessons in hermeneutics, the science of interpreting scriptures is to know (1) whose speaking, (2) to whom the speaking is done (3) about whom or what is being spoken. These simple principles often used by rational minds are jettisoned when speaking about bible prophecy. John Spoke About the Coming Wrath It is a theme shared by several writers of the Bible. Many today speak of a yet to come wrath. They hold people in fear and trepidation. Seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, John asked, Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (Matthew 3:7)Using the principles above, we first identify John, the immerser, as the speaker. Secondly, he addresses his contemporaries, Pharisees and Sadducees as a brood of vipers. He wants to know why they, in addition to penitent disciples have come to his baptism? Who had warned them to flee from the coming wrath? Thirdly, he speaks concerning the wrath to come or the about to come wrath, literally, the coming wrath. John’s message grew out of a contemporary ongoing event, his baptisms, to a contemporary people, those who had come out from Jerusalem and Judea and from around the Jordan river to be baptized of him. Next was the reason and motivation that drew them there in large numbers, a desire to escape what he styles the coming wrath. It is apparent that John’s hearers believed this coming wrath would happen in their lifetime and that their present action of repenting and confessing their sins could avert its effect on them. Paul and the Coming Wrath For Paul, the wrath is once again contemporary and applicable to the same people in the same locale. Identifying those who murdered the Messiah, a geographical link is made to the same area where John preached and baptized. “For you became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins; but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.” (1 Thessalonians 2:14-16) As with John the baptizer, Paul targets the impenitent antagonists of Judea and people around Jerusalem as those marked for the coming wrath. Likewise he sees the event as contemporary to his generation. Using the same words as John, he urges that his readers wait for the Lord from heaven who delivers us from the wrath to come, literally, the about to come wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10). Luke’s Prophecy Concerning Wrath and The Temple Describing what is commonly known as the overthrow of the Jewish temple and their theocratic state, (Luke 21:5,6), Luke says there would be great distress in the land [of Judea] and wrath upon this people. (Luke 21:23). He too cites Jerusalem and Judea as the scene of this wrath. He marks it as the time when all things written are fulfilled, (21:22) connecting it to the coming of the Son of Man (v. 27), the coming of the kingdom (v. 31) all within that generation which would by no means pass away till all these things take place, (v.32). Thus for all those who spoke of the coming wrath, they saw it related to Jerusalem and Judea, to John and Jesus’ contemporaries and murderers. It was imminent in their day and happened before that generation passed. A simple lesson on hermeneutics, who’s speaking, who’s spoken to and what is spoken about will go far to cure the prophetic madness afflicting the church and society today. How To Use Super-Sizing, Portion Distortion And Dietary Displacement To Your Advantage

By Tom Venuto Ever since the independent film, Super Size Me was released, research on the relationship between increasing obesity and increasing portion sizes has skyrocketed and the results have been virtually unanimous. There have been numerous well-designed studies published just in the last several years which confirmed exactly what we suspected (and much of what the movie suggested): * Portion sizes have increased in restaurants and fast food venues on a major scale over the last several decades * We self-serve ourselves larger portions in the home than we used to * When more food is put in front of us, we almost always eat more * Most people underestimate how many calories they are eating * All of these factors have contributed to the growing obesity problem and the related health problems that come along with it The obvious solution would seem to be to decrease portion sizes across the board, and indeed awareness of and control over portion sizes in general is important. However, research has demonstrated that perhaps an even better solution is to keep the portion sizes generous, but decrease the energy density (calories per unit of volume) in the foods you put on your plate. Several studies revealed that eating more low calorie density foods, especially green vegetables, salad vegetables and other fibrous carbs, as well as very lean proteins, maintains a feeling of fullness while reducing energy intake. In other words, large portions of highly nutritious, low calorie foods displaced the less nutritious, calorie-dense foods! Most people allow the bad foods to push out the good foods, but you can actually do the same in reverse! In a study published in the Journal of The American Dietetic Association, researchers fed one group a compulsory first course salad which was kept low in energy density by using very low calorie dressing with no high calorie toppings no bacon, cheese or croutons, etc). After the salad, the subjects were allowed to eat as much pasta as they wanted. A second group was also allowed to eat as much pasta as they wanted but was not given a compulsory salad to eat beforehand. The results: As you might guess, eating a low energy density first course enhanced satiety (fullness) and reduced the overall amount of calories that were eaten during the whole meal. Since the research has repeatedly discovered that almost everyone will eat more when served larger portions from a larger plate or container, and there is obviously a serious issue of “portion distortion” occurring, another group of scientists and psychologists decided to test this even further by providing larger plates or containers of low energy density, high nutrient density foods before the main course and or in between meals. When more of the low energy density foods were made available first, the subjects ate even more of these healthy foods, which filled them up even more and decreased the amount of high calorie density foods eaten in the main course. Reporting their findings in the Journal of Nutrition Education And Behavior, the researchers said that there is a silver lining to all the negative findings about super sized portions and overeating that we have discovered in recent years: That is, although we eat more when more is put in front of us, We can use this phenomenon in reverse by serving large plates, bowls or containers of healthy, low energy density foods like fruits, salads and raw vegetables as snacks and first courses. “While a small bowl of raw carrots might make for a good afternoon snack”, said one of the researchers, “a large bowl might even be better.” Tom Venuto is a natural bodybuilder, certified strength coach (CSCS) and author of “Burn the Fat, Feed The Muscle, which teaches you how to get lean without drugs or supplements using secrets of the world’s best bodybuilders and fitness models.
